Still Having Problems

While I have made progress this week, I am still having problems focusing enough to write. I’m hoping to be able to write next week.

I am suffering from Meniere’s disease and Migraines and focusing is difficult.

Podcast Recommendation – Back Story with the American History Guys

Back Story is an American history podcast but with three guys with different perspectives. The guys take an issue and then look at the issue from three and now the fourth century of American history. One is the 18th century guy and gives the perspective of the 18th century, then someone does the 19th century and finally does the 20th and 21st century.

Often the stories involve around holidays but in looking at past stories, they’ve discussed the Scopes trial and the history of unemployment. Its a fascinating look at how American opinions have changed over the years and how for example unemployment would not be an issue in early American history, but will more than likely be the deciding issue in this election in the fall.

If you like American history, I highly recommend Back Story, It makes you think.

Tech Tools – Ear Buds

This is not really something you know nothing about, but something you probably forget about. You have your iPod or mp3 player with you but have nothing to listen to the music or books with. The simple answer? Ear buds.

Ear buds are generally not the most comfortable and you have to deal with wires (I cut a pair in two while doing yard), but they are relatively inexpensive and require no batteries. I keep multiple ear buds with me – my purse, briefcase and suitcase. What I like about the inexpensive ones is that it is easy to have multiple pairs with you.

Now you can go broke with high-end ear buds and blue tooth ear buds, and so it is a little more difficult to have multiple pairs of these types, but you can supplement your extra pairs with cheaper ones.

Again, there is nothing new about ear buds, but having extra ones can never hurt.

Temp Agencies Can be for Everyone

In years past, you only went to a temp agency for light industrial and clerical work but not for so-called management or professional positions. If you’re still under that mindset, times are passing you by. Even twenty years ago, the company I worked for had two engineers through temp agencies. One of the engineers had worked through agencies for years.

Why would an Employee Do This?

  1. Chance to check out an employer without making the commitment to work full-time. If you interview with a company, you really don’t know completely what a company is like. You hope you do, but there’s nothing like working at a company to get the real feel of the place.
  2. Find out what is versus what they say it is. Everywhere there are the official rules and how things are actually done. They rarely are the same. You learn that from working at a place, not just interviewing there.

Why Would an Employer Do This?

  1. Check to see if an applicant can really do the things he or she says they can do in an interview. I always recommend to an employer to have an applicant perform a task you need done to see if the applicant can do it. When they’re working as a temp for you, you can really see if they can do a task.
  2. Check out work habits. Is the temp on time? Does the temp keep busy, is the work accurate? How does the temp get along with the co-workers? This is what you find out when you use a temp.

So if the job search is not going as fast as you would like, take a look at temp agencies. Next week we’ll summarize what we’ve done so far with this series and if we’re done or need to continue.

Podcast Recommendation – After Dark

One of the fun features of the 5by5 Network of Podcasts is the After Dark Series. Not every podcast has an After Dark episode, but the best way I can describe them is what happens after the podcast is over and they’re having a drink (they’re not, but its just relaxed and funny).

Generally people can listen to the podcast live, and so in the After Dark series, the listeners posts episode name ideas, and the two hosts debate them. Is this a must listen to podcast? No. But if you enjoy the network, give it a shot. They’re relatively short and fun. I think you’ll like them.

Tech Tools – Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit

You’ve gone on vacation or had a family outing with pictures and now have a card full of pictures. The answer? Apple Camera Connection Kit.

The camera connection kit I have fits where you put the charger cord. You put the SD card of your camera on the other end of the card and your pictures will show up on your iPad.

You will then see this on your iPad.

Aside from pictures of my cats, you’ll notice at the top of the screen, there is a section called camera. If you select that section you can delete all of the pictures, import all of the pictures or pick and choose which ones you like.

Now taking pictures off of you camera is not new, but normally you those pictures off your laptop. Now imagine taking pictures off and putting them onto your iPad, much thinner and smaller than your laptop. With the many photography apps on the iPad, you can make adjustments to a picture right off your iPad. If your work is a photographer, this can be a timesaver and a Godsend.

For most of us, a camera kit can be a fun tool to use but as a photographer or as a way to empty our digital camera, the camera connection kit can be a great tool to take with you on a family outing or vacation. Check it out.

Don’t Forget the Unemployment Office

The Unemployment Office is not just a place to file for unemployment or get your unemployment check or in some states learn how to get things online. There are some innovative programs some unemployment offices are doing.

I first heard about a great program in Connecticut on 60 Minutes. Joe Carbone has an organization called The Workplace, which is funded in part through the Workplace Investment Act. It is available in all fifty states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. territories. What the 60 Minutes episode had that was so great a program paying employers to try unemployed workers for a period of time for the opportunity to hire.

The employer is not paying for the employee but has an opportunity to try an employee. The employee has a chance to show his or her ability. Most of just want a chance. To learn more about this system or locate specific resources in your area, go to www.workforceinvestmentworks.com.

Next week temp agencies.

Podcast Recommendation – NPR Books Podcast

Similar to the Book Review by the New York Times, NPR Books Review is another excellent podcast on new books. I have already added books to my Kindle and Audible wish list from listening to NPR Books. NPR Books generally has more a theme to its recommendations that Book Review, but both are great.

Each podcast is about 30 to 35 minutes, and you’ll leave with at least one book you’ll want to check out. Give NPR Books a listen.

Tech Tools – Stylus

You’re tired of finger prints on your iPad or would like a more pen type device to write or draw. The answer? Stylus.

Aside from screen protectors on an iPhone and iPad, using a stylus is one of the more controversial aspects of iOS devices. Apple feels the touch screens are for fingers, but the screens become smudged. I am still uncertain how I like a stylus. This is not like what you would use for an old Palm device. Here are my top three:

Top 3 Stylus

  1. Wacom Bamboo - the tip is a little more tapered, but it is squishy, but it is a nice stylus.

2. Adonit Jot Pro – this stylus has a disk instead of rubber at the end and provides a little more precision. You have to practice with it, and it doesn’t work well with screen protectors.

3. Cosmonaut – this is a still relatively new stylus, but I like the thickness. Its easy to use, and I recommend trying it.

By no means do you need a stylus, but if you’re thinking about one, try out one of these three.
